This fall, Apple should release a charger with a USB TYPE-C interface, and Apple will also ship the Lightning to USB TYPE-C cable to connect the iPhone to the charger. Why doesn’t the iPhone use the type-C interface?
A few days ago, from Chargerlab, the charger for the new iPhone in 2018 will use the USB TYPE-C interface to provide 18W fast charge. Apple will also ship the Lightning to USB TYPE-C charging cable to connect the iPhone and charger. Apple still insists. Use the Lightning interface on iOS devices. Is the Lightning interface better than the USB Type-C interface?
In fact, Lightning is not as good as Type-C, whether it is faster than data transfer speed or charging speed. The openness and expandability of Type-C are incomparable to Lightning. In the number of pins, 12 of Type-C exceeds 8 of Lightning, resulting in more interface protocols compatible with Type-C interfaces. The amount of current that can be loaded is also larger. Why doesn’t the iPhone use the type-C interface?
Type-C is compatible with various fast charging schemes such as PD, QC3, QC4, etc., while iOS devices using Lightning interface can only support up to 14.5V/2A fast charging. Because the Lightning interface is designed with 2A current carrying capacity in mind, the Type-C supports up to 3A, and can be customized to 5A according to requirements.
On the other hand, in fact, Apple itself is a member of the Type-C designer, and the successful launch of Type-C is equivalent to a part of Apple’s own. Since last year, Apple’s Thunderbolt 3 interface has adopted the same appearance and full compatibility with Type-C. It can be said that Apple is very clear that Type-C will be the mainstream interface in the future.
